Axmouth is a pretty village 1 mile from the estuary mouth of the River Axe.
Up until the 16th century, Axmouth was one of the busiest ports on the south west coast, then the estuary mouth was much wider and deeper offering a safe haven to shipping.
A change in the tidal currents caused the creation of a shingle beach at Seaton and this with subsequent silting up of the estuary meant that shipping could no longer navigate the river to Axmouth.
There are two ancient Inns left dating from the time when Axmouth was a busy port, “the Ship” and the “Harbour Inn” which claims to have been an Inn since 1150.
