Seaton Bay

The beach at Seaton is a mile long steeply shelving shingle beach with the chalk cliffs of White cliff to the west and the red Haven Cliffs to the East.

Axmouth Harbour is on the mouth of the River Axe Estuary at the foot of the Haven Cliffs.

Fishing from the beach during both day and night time is popular with spinning being allowed as well as bottom baiting. Large catches of mackerel have been taken during the high tides of the summer months.

Codling show from mid-November until late February; squid and lug cocktails are best baits. Night tides fish best with the first four hours of the rising tide the most promising. Anglers can expect dogfish and bass for most of the year, with the other species being caught from June until early October.

Tackle

A standard Beachcaster and a 6500 size reel loaded with 15lb mainline is sufficient. Casts of 80-100 metres will put you among the fish.

A 5oz grip lead will be needed as there is a strong lateral tide flow in the bay.

Bass roam the beach and the entrance to the harbour, where a float fished sand eel or legered live rag worm or peeler crabs are the top baits.

Summer mackerel and Pollack fall to feathers and float fishing.

Try for mullet midway between the harbour mouth and mooring area with a small spinner baited with harbour rag.

Fish off the quay where the access is good on a rising tide ground baiting heavily

Landing your catch can be a challenge and you need to keep an eye out for moving boats.

Flounder are caught the other side of the road bridge. Crab and rag are the preferred baits. Fish the tide up. This is not a renowned Flounder mark, but it does produce fish.
