Axe Cliff Golf Club.
At the top of East Devon’s steepest lane you will find Axe Cliff Golf Course.
Players and visitors are assured a very warm welcome from David and Angela Quinn who have recently taken over as the new owners of the club. The club is family run, and visitors will invariably be met and greeted personally by the owners.
Founded in 1884, the course is set high on Haven Cliff overlooking Lyme Bay with superb views of the sea and Axe Valley and is one of the oldest courses in Devon.
Axe Cliff is an 18 hole, Par 70, 5969 yards challenging course, very hilly with many blind holes, plenty of narrow fairways, testing greens which are closely guarded by a clutch of large, unforgiving bunkers and some thick rough to avoid.
The course itself is in tremendous condition and is playable throughout the year. It is a free draining course and when rain invariably shuts other golf courses in the in the area, Axe Cliff doesn’t shut unless in extreme weather conditions ensuring a good standard of golf can be played all year round.
Due to its cliff top position the prevailing winds guarantee that playing conditions are never the same from day to day.
The finishing holes are worth waiting for, and the final four holes are simply breathtaking, it is worth playing this course just for the 15th and 16th holes situated right on the very edge off the massive cliff edge. An awe inspiring end to a magical round!
No handicap certificate is required except for Competitions and as the club is a proprietary golf club and not a member’s one, it actively welcomes visitors.
Clubhouse and catering facilities have recently been refurbished, and is able to offer food all day in the warm comfortable restaurant/bar. The clubhouse can also cater for all types of functions including parties, weddings and christenings.
There is a small pro-shop, it stocks a large selection of golf balls, tees, shoes etc, and with the imminent construction of a new shop will be able to offer an extensive range of products.
Lessons can be booked in advance with an affiliated pro and there is a practise area, driving net and putting green available for use.
